OWH Midweek Throwdown - Birthday

For the OWH  Midweek Throwdown Challenge, I decided to use one of the awesome OWH tutorials to create a birthday card! If you haven't perused them yet, here is the link. I chose the Pinwheel tutorial and it was so easy!  There is a link-up there too where you can add your finished project and see what others have created! Before you scroll any further, I must warn you of the train wreck up ahead. Do you ever have those days when nothing seems to fit, colors don't match, you adhere something crooked? That's what happened on card #1 but I didn't give up!!!
I have watched many videos from Operation Write Home....I find myself talking to Sandy as though she is in the room with me sometimes. (LOL) I have learned SOOOO much from her techniques but have never tried the tutorials and now I wonder what took me so long??? I digress...

The 1st pinwheel turned out great with the exception of the papers chosen. I think they are wayyyy too busy.
I added just a bit of adhesive to the back of the card at the top and bottom to adhere the ribbon. The ribbon didn't lie flat enough to suit me so I used my glue pen to add just a smidge of stickyness. As you can see, it does not dry clear when used on ribbon. What type of adhesive do you use for your ribbon?
I thought I had a brilliant idea to use purple embossing powder on the yellow paper to bring everything full circle. Ummmm, mistake numberrrrr....I lost count. Not even purple. BUT....I learn from my errors and that is why you are seeing this card today! (It's also a reminder to me the next time I get a bright idea) Ha! The sentiment is from the Hero Arts Live Live stamp set.
On to the good stuff! The 1st pinwheel was a bit larger than I needed so I thought I would improvise. The original pieces were cut at 2-5/8". Ok, I am college educated but once you get past the 1/4, 1/2 & 3/4 marks....you lose me so I relied on this handy tool I found. YAY! I feel so smart now. Well, ok, I haven't actually learned it yet but I have it saved to my desktop!
For my second attempt, I chose papers from The Paper Studio - A Day at the Beach and DCWV - Cafe Mediterranean. The button and flower are from my stash.
The base paper is Core'dinations, ribbon is Offray (again not adhering completely the way I want it to), gems are by Heidi Grace and the twine bow is Hemptique.
Another tip I learned form OWH is to be sure all of your corners are adhered to the base so they don't get snagged on anything and have to undergo triage prior to their trip overseas. Looks like the top one could use some more tlc.
This sentiment is from The Scrapbooking Queen's Princess Birthday stamp set stamped with Stampabilities Dye ink - Bright Pink
I'm pretty happy with the 2nd one. What's that they say? If at first you don't succeed.....try try again! Thank goodness for tutorials and videos and friends like you to help along the way.
~~ Hope you have a crafty day ~~

I have both masculine and feminine bags for you today.
I tried yet another NEW technique to create the clouds. Who knew it would have been so easy? The globe was cut from the Cricut Going Places cartridge at 4.25". I placed a Colorbok mini heart brad in the area (I think) that I live. The free Sofia font can be found here.
To make the clouds, simply cut a scalloped circle in half and adhere together. Since this was a larger project, I used the Spellbinders Grand Scalloped Circle. I will use the smaller one on greeting cards.
Not bad for a 1st try! Don't ever be afraid to try something new :-)
I used a few Ranger Liquid Pearls - Rouge and draped a heart necklace from Hobby Lobby  over the top. The ribbon is from my stash.
This sweet little girl, colored with Spectrum Noir markers, is a freebie image from Sliekje stamps and can be found here.  I used the Spellbinders Fleur de Lis Rectangle die and adhered her to sea green glitter paper. The heart paper is from The Paper Studio Four Seasons pack. Ribbon is Simplicity Twill Tape (not sure what twill tape is but it looked like thick ribbon lol).
Ranger Stickles were added to the envelope and the heart embellishment is from my stash. I think it was meant to be a Christmas ornament.
I'm "sharing the love" today along with all of the Awesome Sponsors! Winner to be drawn and announced on Tuesday 1/29/13 right here in this very spot!

Winter's in the Air Hop ~

Oh the weather outside is frightful, but these projects are so delightful.
Welcome to the ‘Winter’s In The Air’ blog hop.

We have all made projects to warm your heart, and potentially decorate your home, during these snowy months. Today, I present another first for me.....a fireplace card. I am so addicted to Pinterest and all of the amazing ideas. Here is where I found my inspiration (and instructions).  Being a Mississippi girl, I am not a fan of cold weather so the 1st thing I think of is a warm and cozy fireplace!

Here's a tip for you. The stamp I wanted to use was too big for the space. I stamped it, scanned it to my computer and re-sized it. Wonder why I haven't thought of this before now!
Supplies Used:
DCWV Cotton Bloom Cardstock (green wallpaper)
Fire Image - Close To My Heart Happy Camper Stamp
Picture Image - Hero Arts Friendship Frames Stamp
Vase with Flowers - Cricut Bloom Cartridge (cut at 1-1/4", bl 4, sp low, pr high)
Fiskars Border Punch
Tim Holtz Distress Ink - Tea Dye         Inkadinkado Dye Ink - Black
Stickles - Yellow      Studio G Glitter Glue - Red
Foam Tape (behind the picture frame)
Spectrum Noir Markers - TN7, EB1, GB5, CT4, EB5, EB7, CT1, BGR1
Copic Markers - G43, R56, R59

I confess, I have no interior design skills so my card is a work in progress. Leave a comment below and tell me what YOU would do to improve this card. This is an A2 (5-1/5" x 4-1/4") card so the space is limited. I am always up for constructive criticism so feel free to offer as many suggestions as you like! In exchange, I will use some of those ideas to finish my project and choose 1 lucky follower to receive the Blog Candy below! Check back on 1/23/13 to see the winner AND the finished card!
I am running a bit behind. What started out as a craft room tidy-up on Sunday turned into a craft room disaster! I don't want to rush in to this card transformation so please be patient and check back on Sunday. :-)
Happy Sunday everyone. I so enjoyed reading all of your comments on how to improve my fireplace card. Unfortunately, everything was stuck like glue and I am unable to modify the existing card. I will create a new one implementing your ideas and post at a later date. I think I will do this more often. It really helped me to think outside of the box and be more creative. Thank you for the inspiration!!
Congratulations to Me-Ma Kim ~ Please email your address to msmith38652@gmail.com. Thanks again everyone for the great challenge I have ahead :-) Hope you are having a creative, crafty day!
BUT WAIT......THERE'S MORE.....!!!!
Be sure to comment on everyone’s post so you will be entered to win this fabulous BLOG CANDY from Melanie.  It includes paper, stickers, metal embellies, adhesive, mists, stencils, a journal and more! Winner will be chosen on 1/22/13 and announced on her blog ~ Good Luck to you!

Teresa's Blogaversary Hop ~

Hello to all our crafty friends! We have a great blog hop for you today. A little over a year ago Teresa began a new blog to celebrate the fact she wanted a change in her life. And for that change to be permanent, came lots of prayer and leaning on God to give the right answers. The answers He needed to give, not the answers Teresa desired. Well here we are 1 year later and Teresa is a Stay at Home Wife, loving life and doing all she needs to do to create a warm, loving atmosphere for her family!

Thanks for joining us today...Teresa asked all the participants to create something that represented a change in their life. If you haven't already, be sure to start at the beginning with Teresa's project and see the fabulous blog candy she is offering!
While Christmas shopping, I passed Jo~Ann's twice saying to myself "so what if I have a coupon...I do not NEED 1 thing". After all, I was on a mission to finish checking off my to do list. My car had a mind of its own because I ended up stopping anyway. As I was checking out, a little lady came in with a piece of paper in hand. I heard her asking if they had someone that could cross stitch something for her. As the salesperson explained that they didn't offer that service, I was struggling mentally...should I say anything? My mother taught me to cross stitch 36 years ago so I have experience but not enough hours in the day. I took my change and receipt and as I walked past her, something made me turn around and  offer my services. It was a simple saying that she later explained meant everything to her son. She wanted it to go in his office and had been searching for 5 years for someone to make it. As she told me about the saying, tears came to her eyes.....and then of course to mine. She offered to pay me for my time but I wouldn't hear of it. This was my chance to "give back" and I didn't need anything in return.
Remembering how I felt as we parted that day, I decided to make a change this year and do more volunteering within my community. There are so many ways to help that do not cost a thing and yet, we are so busy handling the pressures of every day life, we don't see those opportunities.

Here are a few ways I have thought of to Volunteer:
Making bookmarks for adults as well as children to leave at the local library
Creating banners for hospitalized children to remind them that someone cares
Doing something for my grandson's kindergarten class to inspire them
Visiting the nursing home just to bring a smile to someone's day or listen to their wisdom
Adopting Angels from the tree at Christmas time so children will experience the wonder
Helping pack the boxes for needy families at Christmas
Having a bake sale and donating the proceeds to a charitable organization
Making cards for Operation Write Home ~ providing cards for soldiers to write home on
Assisting in educational programs offered by the Union Co Heritage Museum

They say there is strength in numbers so I created the North Mississippi Creative Crafters Facebook group in hopes of being able to really make a difference with the help of others in my area. If you have any great volunteer ideas, please post them! I'm open to all suggestions.

Here are a few of the bookmarks I have been working on ~ Most of these are still works in progress:

I am thrilled that you took the time to stop by today. Next stop on the hop is the oh so talented Melissa! If you experience a big change in the near future....hope it's the best one ever! Have a great day!

Ready to join in the fun? Let's go!

My son's 23rd birthday is this month. Each year I am in awe of how grown up he is now. Seems like only yesterday he was playing outside, in the mud puddles, in his dirt stained underwear. I was tired of his school clothes getting ruined, we lived in the country so I said why not! LOL
This is a birthday card I am making for him.  Notice that the hands are the same length and pointed at 2 and 3? I thought that was a pretty nifty idea!
This is the interior of the card. I am going to create a helicopter with my Cricut because he is an Apache helicopter mechanic with the National Guard. I always tell him "your day is only as good as YOU make it". Hopefully that is something he will remember for years to come.

Supplies used:
Graphic 45 - Happy Haunting (Midnight Magic)
The Paper Studio - Affinity (gold)
Core'dinations Pearls - Scarlet Pearl
Clock Face Image - Creating Myself
Spectrum Noir Markers - GB5 & TN7
Tim Holtz Distress Ink - Tea Dye
Spellbinders Dies
Buttons, Pop Dots & Foam Tape - from my stash
Clock Hands - I cut the sticks off of some spider cupcake toppers (tomorrow....I will find the black arrows that I know are in there somewhere!)
Tombow Aqua Glue
Studio G Glitter Glue
Sentiment - Printed from the internet
Gears & Graphic 45 papers are blog hop gifts from Gloria at Scraps of Life.

Thank you so much for stopping in to see me today. Be sure to leave a comment because I have blog candy!! Winner to be drawn on Wednesday 1/9/13 and announced right here!
